CyberDefenders Certification Guide

We have designed our certification process to be straightforward, transparent, and flexible. This guide covers everything you need to know, from selecting your certification pathway to maintaining and renewing your professional credential.

Two Paths to Certification

To match different experience levels and learning preferences, you can choose between two pathways. Both options lead to the same exam, certification, and Credly digital badge

Path 1: Exam Only

If you are an experienced cybersecurity analyst and prefer independent preparation, the Exam-Only option allows you to proceed directly to the certification exam.

  • Prerequisites: No formal CyberDefenders training is required.

  • Preparation: You may prepare through self-study, practical work experience, or any third-party resources of your choice.

Path 2: Course + Exam Bundle

If you prefer structured learning and a comprehensive curriculum, the bundle option combines educational resources with your certification attempt. This option includes:

  • 4 months of full access to official course content, video lectures, and study materials.

  • Hands-on labs designed to simulate real-world incident response scenarios.

  • In addition to exam access, certification, and a Credly digital badge.

Certification Validity

All CyberDefenders certifications are valid for four (4) years from the exact date you pass your examination.

This validity period was established by an independent panel of Security Operations Center (SOC) industry practitioners. Because cybersecurity is a rapidly evolving domain, this 4-year cycle ensures that all credential holders continue to demonstrate current, relevant, and technically proficient skills in the field.

Recertification Options

To maintain your active certified status, you must fulfill recertification requirements before your credential's expiration date. You can renew your certification for an additional four (4) years using one of the following two options:

Option 1: Retake the Examination

Pass the latest version of your certification exam during your active cycle to automatically renew your credential for another four years.

Option 2: Submit 36 CPE Credits

Earn and submit 36 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits over your 4-year certification cycle.

  • Eligibility: CPE activities must demonstrate ongoing learning, professional development, or contributions to the cybersecurity domain.

  • Scope: Activities do not need to be limited to your specific certification level; educational milestones across any cybersecurity discipline are eligible.

  • How to Submit: Log in to your CyberDefenders account and submit your credits directly via your dashboard using the CPE Submission Form.

For a detailed breakdown of pre-approved activities and evidence requirements, please refer to our Claiming CPE Credits guide.

Expired Certifications

If your certification expires, you can regain your certified status by:

  • Passing the certification exam again

  • Submitting eligible CPE credits
